Disgusted by the ways in which adults “browbeat” and “trampled on” their children, she dreamed up Pippi, “the strongest girl in the world,” in the winter of 1941. Perhaps one of the most uncompromising-and uncompromised-children’s heroines from the twentieth century is Pippi Longstocking, literary creation of Swedish writer Astrid Lindgren. ![]() Plucky heroines abound across Anglo and American children’s literature, yet their own struggles with gendered strictures and the trajectories of their comings-of-age often present conflicting narratives. ![]() ![]() ![]() But as Kyana struggles to keep up with magic and regular school, prepare for the competition, and keep her magic secret, she wonders if it's possible to save her friendships, too. Reading some of the contributions some people seem to think that a cast must not only mention actors skills but also race, but I do not agree. It would be equally strange to defend the choice of actors for certain characters by explaining Javert could have been Haitian as there were some Haitians in France at that time, but then you would have to argue why Javert could be from Haiti, but not Valjean, which discussion to me seems even more nonsensical. But to portray this story in this time with the actors we now have it would be strange to cast actors on basis of racial attributes dating back two centuries. Les miserables is a story, written in a time when racial diversity was less then it is now. What I do not enjoy are the contributions by what I have to describe as the race police. Beautiful colours, scenery, script, a classic social story and of course good actors. Let me start to say that I have really enjoyed the current adaptation of les miserables by the BBC. ![]() ![]() ![]() Beads of sweat dripped from his brow, turning to ice as they fell through the air. He was pale as a corpse, shaking like a dead leaf in a high wind. The dark-haired boy stood in a pentacle of his own, smaller, filled with different runes, three feet away from the main one. Then two yellow staring eyes materialized in the heart of the smoke. The column hung above the middle of the pentacle, bubbling ever upward against the ceiling like the cloud of an erupting volcano. ![]() ![]() The sulfur cloud contracted into a thick column of smoke that vomited forth thin tendrils they licked the air like tongues before withdrawing. The darkened room filled with a yellow, choking cloud of brimstone, in which indistinct black shadows writhed and roiled. This book is a study in humanity and all the beauty and brokenness it holds. The prose is rich and engaging and Berry knows exactly when the end her chapters to leave you wanting more. Every character is dynamic and understandable even when their actions falter.
